Study Background
Having a family history of bipolar disorder is one of the strongest risk factors for developing bipolar disorder.
Identifying and treating the children of parents with bipolar disorder may help to prevent or slow the progression of bipolar disorder.
In addition to providing treatment for the child, we will also learn more about how we may best help others in the future.

Additional Information
The purpose of this study is to understand the effectiveness of two psychotherapy approaches in preventing or decreasing symptoms in adolescents with a family history of bipolar disorder.
Your family may qualify for this study by meeting the following criteria
- Have a parent who has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder
- Have a child that is 12-18 years old
Involvement includes the child participating in an initial interview about mood, sleep, and emotions. After this assessment, both parent and child will have one 45 minute follow-up session with a study therapist. All children will receive referral resources and one of two talk therapy interventions with a research therapist. Parents will also be asked to complete a diagnostic screening interview and study assessments.
Families will be compensated for their participation in our study.
There is no cost for your family to participate in our research program.
Visits can be conducted via videoconference for any participant residing in the United States or if preferred, in-person at Western Psychiatric Hospital’s (WPH) outpatient Bellefield Towers offices located on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA.
