Study Background
Researchers at Temple University are conducting a research study to assess how children’s sleep, eating, and activity behaviors affect their growth.

The study also assesses how hormones that regulate sleep and the environment in which children live affect these behaviors and growth.

All participating families will be compensated and provided with summaries of current recommendations for sleep, eating, and activity behaviors in children at the end of the study.

Why is this study being done?
Our study aims to assess how children’s sleep, eating, and activity behaviors affect their growth. Our study also assesses how hormones that regulate sleep and the environment in which children live affect these behaviors and growth.
Is this study for my family?
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:
  • Your child is between the ages of 5-8 years old
  • Your child's BMI is greater than the 10th percentile but no greater than 120% overweight
  • You are the child’s primary caregiver and at least 18 years old
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Diagnosable sleep disorder
  • Medication use or diagnosis of a medical or psychiatric condition that may impact sleep/weight status
  • Current or planned treatment for weight control
What will happen if my family participates in the study?
Children will complete five 10 day assessments (baseline, 4, 8, 12, and 16 months) during which the following will be measured: sleep, eating and activity behaviors, melatonin levels (via saliva samples), measures of the home and neighborhood environment, and anthropometrics (height, weight, and adiposity).
Will my family be paid for participating in this research study?
Compensation up to $550 is provided for participation in this study.
Will it cost my family anything to participate in this study?
There is no cost for your family to participate in this study.
