About this research study
Researchers at UCSD Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research (CHEAR) and the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry are working together to conduct a no-cost behavioral weight-loss research program for adolescents and their parents. The Family, Responsibility, Education, Support and Health for Teens (FRESH-Teen) study is a 6-month treatment program for adolescents ages 13-16 with overweight and obesity and their parent.

Treatment will be held in groups in the evenings for 6 months and will focus on weight loss, strategies for healthy and sustainable lifestyle habits and skills for effective parenting. No medication or medical procedures are involved in the study.

There is no cost to participants and families are compensated for their time and effort. The entire duration of the study is 18 months.

Am I eligible for participation?
You and your teen may be eligible if:
  • Your teen is between 13 and 16 years old.
  • Your teen has overweight and obesity
  • You live in Minneapolis

You are ineligible if:
  • Your teen has any medical conditions that impact weight or may affect participation in physical activity or treatment
How many people will take part in this study?
Up to 150 pairs of parents and overweight teens.
How long will you and your teen be in the study?
Treatment lasts 6 months. There are 4 assessments time points:
  1. Before treatment begins
  2. Immediately after treatment ends
  3. Six months after treatment ends
  4. Twelve months after treatment ends
The entire study lasts 18 months.
Participation in the study is voluntary.
