About this research study:
Researchers are examining how varying levels of nicotine can affect your tobacco use pattern and your health.
The purpose of this study is to look at whether or not you are inclined to choose cigarettes and/or any other nicotine products, like nicotine gum or patch, e-cigarettes, or smokeless tobacco products, during the course of the study.

Why is this study being done?
Researchers want to better understand the levels of nicotine and the effect on the other tobacco products you choose. Further, they want to evaluate those choices and the effect they might have on your overall health.
Is this study for me?
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Smoking at least 5 and no more than 40 cigarettes per day for the past month
  • Medically healthy
  • No unstable psychiatric conditions
What will happen if I participate in the study?
You will first attend a screening visit to see if you are eligible. If you are eligible after the screening visit, the research study will last 20 weeks. During this time you will attend 12 visits; weekly visits for 6 weeks and then every other week for 10 weeks and a follow-up visit 1 month after the end of the intervention.

You will complete questionnaires, have a breath test for carbon monoxide and vital signs will be taken. We will also collect urine and saliva samples from you. Throughout the study, you will keep daily records of your tobacco use. Lastly, you will exchange points for study products including your assigned study cigarettes and other tobacco or nicotine-containing products.
Will I be paid for being in this research study?
If you complete the research study and comply with all of the study requirements, you could receive up to $1,240 for your time and effort.
Will it cost me anything to participate in this study?
There is no cost for you to participate in this study.
